"Except for any family member who is an exempt individual, each adult (18-62 years of age) resident of public housing must contribute 8 hours per month of community service (not including political activities); or participate in an economic self-sufficiency program for 8 hours per month; or perform 8 hours per month of combined activities (as described above)." (Code of Federal Regulations)

Residents may be exempt from this requirement for any of the following reasons:

  • 62 years or older
  • Enrolled as a full-time student
  • Engaged in work activities (at least 20 hours per week)
  • Blind or Disabled, as defined by the Social Security Act, or, is a primary caretaker of such an individual
  • Meets the requirements for being exempted from having to engage in a work activity under any New York State Social Security or Welfare program
  • Is a member of a family receiving TANF assistance

Residents work with the Resident Services Assistant to coordinate a placement for completing the required community service. Past community service placements have included recreation centers, food banks, animal shelters, etc.
